PTA leaders raise concerns as Hillsborough explores new school boundaries

A plan to redraw attendance boundaries for Hillsborough County community educational institutions lacks transparency and general public dialogue, according to a mother or father organization that is pushing for alter.

The County Council of PTA/PTSA, which signifies parent groups all-around the university district, states information released final thirty day period online does not present more than enough detail about transportation, cost price savings, and what the district would do with faculties that it may near or “repurpose.”

The council also disapproves of the format for a series of approaching community gatherings. Planned from Jan. 9 to 13, these will be the 1st in-particular person meetings given that the job guide, New York-based WXY Studio, was employed in March.

“Right now, as considerably as we know, there will be no official presentation, just printed copies of the maps, laptops for on the net reviews, and there will be district and WXY workforce obtainable to remedy person thoughts,” the PTA council claimed in a “Call to Action” posted Saturday on social media.

“This variety of set up is not what we look at to be genuine group instruction and engagement. It restrictions who has facts and does not supply context or general public data for the community to appear up with inquiries.”

The document urges mom and dad to get hold of university board customers and district leaders and insist on far more community dialogue right before the board is questioned to vote in February.

In redrawing boundaries, district leaders hope to use university space more efficiently and minimize their operating price range at a time of continued point out problem about spending.

Louis Vuitton Fall 1998 Ready-to-Wear Collection

Louis Vuitton Fall 1998 Ready-to-Wear Collection

Editor’s note: This selection was initially introduced in March 1998 in Paris and has been digitized as section of Vogue Runway’s ongoing endeavours to doc historic fashion demonstrates.

In the 1990s quite a few heritage houses got makeovers as fashion increasingly corporatized. The trials and triumphs of John Galliano at Christian Dior and Alexander McQueen at Givenchy, for case in point, have been well documented. Marc Jacobs also ended up in Paris at a storied maison, but his remit was distinctive. He was tasked with building a thing from nothing—a completely ready-to-don collection for a leather goods and accessory company which experienced in no way experienced one prior to. “When Bernard Arnault asked me if I’d do it, it took me just about 5 seconds to say indeed,” Jacobs recalled in a 1998 interview with The Fiscal Times. “Design is generally subjective but high quality is objective and that is what captivated me to Louis Vuitton.”

It so transpired that Jacobs’s debut, for fall 1998, coincided with Martin Margiela’s for Hermès. The press dubbed this situation “The Struggle of the Bags.” In so undertaking they designed much more sound than either designer, both of whom went in for distinct variants on simplicity. Jacobs’s selection had an American in Paris vibe. There was just about a Puritanism to his spare styles and constrained palette. “The selection of 50 outfits was so achingly hip, so New York minimal that its effects was severely muted,” wrote The Guardian at the time. “The apparel consist of the type of inverted snobbery that would make a solution society out of position. More shocking than Jacobs’s understated technique was the simple fact that there was only a single bag in the demonstrate, and it (like the clothing) experienced no seen logos. In introducing an solely new group to Louis Vuitton’s providing, Jacobs was setting up at ground zero, and he translated that idea into designs as elemental and clean as the geometry of a trunk, an legendary LV piece that the designer referenced in a statement he contributed to the “Backstage Information & Notes” feature that ran in the July 1998 difficulty of Vogue, which is reprinted under.

“Marc on Vuitton”
“I feel people today ended up expecting a great deal of monograms. It is difficult to you should anyone, but we started out at zero—this was a firm that experienced hardly ever carried out garments before. The outfits were being up to date, basic, deluxe, a backdrop for a luggage company—utilitarian and simple. Was it also utilitarian for the French? Well, you know, one of the initially Louis Vuitton trunks was gray and flat so it would be stackable. It was quite sensible I necessarily mean, there is method to all this insanity. Also, originally there was no monogram on the outside the house. Then Vuitton was copied so considerably he changed it to a stripe. Then a test. Then initials, which, by the way, were being encouraged by Japanese art in Paris at the time. I’m an specialist on all of this now.

Vuitton is a luxurious brand—it’s functional, but it is also a status accent. I made the decision status would be carried out my way, which is to say invisibly. That implies the Vuitton symbol is embossed on a messenger bag, white on white. For me that is what standing is: It is absolutely not about an additional century or about decoration in an apparent way. The notion that everything has to be the very same in trend, that everybody has to observe a person trend, that there is one particular form of standing is erroneous. You simply cannot assess a beaded costume to a straightforward cotton raincoat.

Also, I really don’t imagine of Louis Vuitton as French necessarily. It’s worldwide. I see Vuitton bags in airports all above the environment. You appear at Hello! magazine and there’s John McEnroe in a white shirt, denims, and a raincoat and carrying a Vuitton bag. That is the alluring, glamorous picture of what Louis Vuitton really should be.”

Despite a cost of living crisis and other challenges, Australia’s economic future is bright

Despite a cost of living crisis and other challenges, Australia’s economic future is bright

I won an award in 2022.

No, it wasn’t a Walkley.

It was an in-house award from The Drum presented at the Christmas party: Patron Saint of Doomsday – for always reminding us that a financial crisis is nigh.

All jokes aside, we do live in a troubled world.

Last year saw an escalation of the climate change crisis, a war in Ukraine, soaring inflation, further phases of a global pandemic, the Bank of England rescue Britain from a major financial crisis, and the death of Queen Elizabeth II – to name but a few moments.

A woman standing in the crowd holds a portrait of the queen with RIP My Queen written on it.
A turbulent year saw a number of major events occur, such as Queen Elizabeth II’s death.  (Reuters: Tom Nicholson )

Aside from the pandemic, the inflation (or “cost of living”) crisis also troubled just about every single Australian.

They exposed our weaknesses, too.

We’re miles behind on the transition to renewable energy power generation, the federal government’s books will take over a decade to be brought back under control, too many Australians can’t afford a home or put food on the table, and women, particularly in the care sectors, are given a raw deal in terms of pay and working conditions.

But let’s take a breath here – a deep breath.

We also need to remember that Australia, as a country, does really well – relatively speaking.

We can still be proud of where we are as a nation. Here’s why.

Australia has a strong economy

Australia is one of the world’s best-performing developed economies.

As at the time of writing, the nation’s economy was growing at 5.9 per cent, supporting an unemployment rate of 3.4 per cent and enjoying a relatively stable currency.

Australia’s unemployment rate holds steady at 3.4 per cent

As of 2021, Australia had the second-highest amount of wealth per adult after Luxembourg, and the 13th-highest financial assets per capita.

At the onset of the pandemic, the government was able to use funds it had collected from taxpayers over the years to support households and businesses, and it did just that.

Fast forward to 2022 and households have amassed roughly $260 billion in savings.

Record low interest rates and booming property and share markets left middle- and upper-income families with unusually high levels of personal wealth.

Australians, by and large, are healthy and wealthy, especially when compared internationally

The United Nations has data to prove it.

Australia is ranked eighth in its Human Development Index, which is a measure of a nation’s longevity, education, and income.

Australia plays a key role on the global stage

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been keen to make his mark on the international political scene and, in turn, promote Australia’s interests.

He travelled to the US, Tokyo, Indonesia, Spain, France, Ukraine, Fiji, and Britain – to name a handful of destinations.

He reinforced Australia’s “friendships” with key trading and strategic allies.

Crucially, he had the attentive ears of all major global leaders. Other prime ministers who have gone before him enjoyed similar welcomes.

Why? Australia is a geographically large and strategically positioned nation in the Asia-Pacific.

Our natural wealth, developed economy, and stable political system makes us a credible and trustworthy economic and political partner on the world stage.

We can be proud of that.

But the gap is widening

Of course, there are key areas which need addressing.

For decades, governments have tried – and largely failed – to improve outcomes for Indigenous people.

In 2023 Australia will hold a referendum on a constitutionally-enshrined Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs applauded in Parliament

There will be resistance.

The federal National Party says it will oppose a constitutionally-enshrined Indigenous Voice to Parliament because it will not “genuinely close the gap”.

The gap between economic and health outcomes for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians needs to be closed, but in fact it’s widening.

The data shows the gap is worsening across adult imprisonment rates, deaths by suicide, out of home care rates, and children being developmentally ready once they reach school age.

More broadly, according to the Australian Council of Social Service, the poverty rate of Australia exceeds 13 per cent of the population.

It means over 3 million Australians suffer through poverty every single day.

It also estimates that roughly 17 per cent of children under the age of 15 live in relative poverty.

Australians can dare to aspire

I’m as guilty as the next journalist for focusing on the “negatives”.

But there’s method behind the madness: the truth can often be inconvenient or uncomfortable to hear or read.

But there’s always hope, and on the road to hope you’ll find aspiration.

Former prime minister Paul Keating touched on this point in October, in the wake of Queen Elizabeth II’s death, during an online event hosted by La Trobe University.

“Who in their right mind could believe that the monarch of Great Britain could represent our aspirations here?

What to know this week

What to know this week

The December jobs report and details from the Federal Reserve’s last policy meeting of 2022 will headline a short opening week of 2023 for investors as Wall Street limps into a new year after its worst run since the Global Financial Crisis.

U.S. stock and bond markets will be closed on Monday, January 2, in observance of New Year’s Day.

Economic data will pick up when traders return to a four-day trading week after a quiet end of December.

The Labor Department will publish its jobs report for December at 8:30 a.m. ET Friday morning, and economists expect a payroll gain of 200,000 jobs last month, per Bloomberg consensus estimates.

Outside of the headline jobs data, three additional updates on the labor market will be on the docket for investors this week, with the latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (or JOLTS report), ADP’s private payrolls data, and the Challenger Job Cuts report all due out.

Alongside the flurry of labor market releases, the Fed will release a readout of its December policy meeting, which investors will pore over for clues on the central bank’s next move. Last month, the Fed raised interest rates by 50 basis points, bringing total increases to its benchmark policy rate to 4.25{515baef3fee8ea94d67a98a2b336e0215adf67d225b0e21a4f5c9b13e8fbd502} in 2022.

Global and U.S. stocks closed out their worst year since 2008 on Friday. Aggressive central bank actions to quell historic inflation and war in Ukraine battered financial markets and ended a three-year winning streak for the major averages.

The S&P 500 tumbled 19.4{515baef3fee8ea94d67a98a2b336e0215adf67d225b0e21a4f5c9b13e8fbd502} in 2022, its largest calendar-year decline since a 38{515baef3fee8ea94d67a98a2b336e0215adf67d225b0e21a4f5c9b13e8fbd502} drop in 2008 during the Great Recession. The Dow fell a comparably modest 9{515baef3fee8ea94d67a98a2b336e0215adf67d225b0e21a4f5c9b13e8fbd502}, holding up better than its index peers.

The Nasdaq Composite wiped out one third of its value, dropping 33{515baef3fee8ea94d67a98a2b336e0215adf67d225b0e21a4f5c9b13e8fbd502} and closing out its first four-quarter decline since the 2000 dot-com bubble as rising interest rates wreaked havoc on technology stocks.

Even as investors turn the page on 2022, much of Wall Street expects more pain remains ahead.

Consensus strategist forecasts see a volatile first half of 2023 and an easier second half. Still, stocks are expected to be little changed — or post marginal gains at best — with the Federal Reserve projected to keep rates high for a sustained period of time.

“Amid the backdrop of the hawkish Fed’s aggressive rate-rising moves leading into 2023, there is an exceedingly greater investor concern about the likelihood of a harder-than-desired landing that would push the U.S. and global economies into a recession,” AXS Investments CEO Greg Bassuk said in an emailed note.

“Investors remain hyper-focused on employment, labor and related economic data, as the ongoing strength of wages could hamper corporate profit margins and cripple earnings across industries and sectors.”

The labor market has cooled in recent months though demand for workers remains high, even as Fed officials has pressed on with their most combative monetary-tightening campaign in decades.

Despite policymakers delivering 425 basis points worth of rate hikes in 2022, the U.S. labor market has averted any substantial hit, while other facets of the economy such as housing and manufacturing have shown signs of a slowdown.

While Wall Street’s consensus estimate for nonfarm payroll growth last month stands at 200,000, this would market a slowdown from the 263,000 jobs added to the economy in November when predictions were roughly the same. The unemployment rate also stands at a low of 3.7{515baef3fee8ea94d67a98a2b336e0215adf67d225b0e21a4f5c9b13e8fbd502}, while the labor force participation rate remains little changed.

“The lag effect of Fed tightening throughout 2022 will slow economic activity in 2023, a natural outcome of fighting inflation,” Treasury Partners chief investment officer Richard Saperstein said in a note, though adding: “The labor market will be the last to turn, forcing the Fed to maintain elevated rates through 2023.”

Minutes from the FOMC’s December meeting are likely to show the thinking behind the central bank’s “slower but higher” regime. Fed Chair Powell has signaled that he and colleagues will switch to smaller rate hikes to assess their toll but may ultimately lift the terminal rate higher.

December’s median forecast showed a new interest rate peak of 5{515baef3fee8ea94d67a98a2b336e0215adf67d225b0e21a4f5c9b13e8fbd502}-5.25{515baef3fee8ea94d67a98a2b336e0215adf67d225b0e21a4f5c9b13e8fbd502}, up from 4.5{515baef3fee8ea94d67a98a2b336e0215adf67d225b0e21a4f5c9b13e8fbd502}-4.75{515baef3fee8ea94d67a98a2b336e0215adf67d225b0e21a4f5c9b13e8fbd502} in September. The Fed’s 0.50{515baef3fee8ea94d67a98a2b336e0215adf67d225b0e21a4f5c9b13e8fbd502} hike, meanwhile, marked a downshift from a steady round of 0.75{515baef3fee8ea94d67a98a2b336e0215adf67d225b0e21a4f5c9b13e8fbd502} hikes.

The FOMC is set to convene January 31-February 1 and is expected to deliver its first rate increase of 2023 and eighth of the current hiking cycle at the conclusion of discussions.

Elsewhere on the economic calendar this week, readings on durable goods orders and PMI data will offer investors the latest snapshots of industrial and manufacturing activity.

The earnings calendar remains light during the off-season, with a few notable names including Conagra (CAG), Constellation Brands (STZ), and Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) set to report.

Major League Baseball is nostalgic, reminding you of the simpler times – when “baseball was life” and the only thing that mattered was the bat, ball and the glove.

The NFL is deeply rooted, with fandom passed on from father to child regardless of the pain it may bring.

And then there’s college football.

It’s the sport that brings us back to our best days each Saturday during the fall. When our adult lives were just getting started, our eyes wide with innocence as the world was splayed in front of us, ripe for the picking.

You see, college football provides the deepest connection with its fans.

Fans either attended the university they cheer for or they have a family or regional tie so deep that the school is part of their soul.

Since each collegiate roster gets a fresh crop of players every four years, the allegiance is not really to the players. It’s to the colors, to the college town that holds such a special spot in our souls.

Each corner wonderfully American in its own way.

Each with a unique tie to college football.

So, let’s take a dive into the wonderful ride that was the 2022 college football season.

Georgia wins its first national championship since 1980 – January 2022

It was finally time for the student to defeat the teacher.

After suffering its first defeat of the season to Nick Saban and Alabama in the SEC Championship Game, Kirby Smart won the only game that mattered, defeating Alabama 33-18 in the national championship game.

“How about this university? How about these fans? This is a special moment for the University of Georgia, a special moment for this team,” Smart said in his postgame interview.

It was Smart’s first win against Saban and just the second time the seven-time national champion had been defeated by a former assistant.

Jimbo Fisher and Nick Saban trade barbs through the media – May 2022

With name, image and likeness taking over college football, it was inevitable that feelings were going to be hurt.

Texas A&M had a monster offseason, with Jimbo Fisher bringing in the top-ranked class of 2022.

CLEMSON’S DABO SWEENEY GIVES HIS UNIQUE TAKE IN NIL: ‘WE BUILT THIS PROGRAM IN GOD’S NAME, IMAGE AND LIKENESS’

The grumblings began early that A&M was “buying” its players, a rumor that Nick Saban seemed to get behind.

At a May conference, Saban said Texas A&M “bought every player on their team.”

Fisher didn’t appreciate the accusation and called a press conference in order to refute the claim and blast Saban in the process.

“Some people think they’re God. Go dig into how God did His deal. You may find out about a guy, a lot of things you don’t want to know. We build him up to be this czar of football. Go dig into his past or anybody who’s ever coached with him. You can find out anything you want to find out what he does and how he does it,” Fisher said.

“I don’t cheat. I don’t lie. If you did my old man slapped me across the face. Maybe someone should have slapped him (Saban),” Fisher said.

The two reportedly put the spat behind them, but it sure did make for some offseason fun.

Tennessee returns to prominence – October 2022

It had been nearly 16 years and six coaches since Tennessee last beat Alabama.

But on a beautiful fall day in Knoxville, the Vols finally vanquished their Nick Saban demons.

In a game that will go down as one of the great regular season college football games of all time, No. 6 Tennessee beat No. 3 Alabama 52-49 at Neyland Stadium.

After a wild four quarters, Tennessee kicker Chase McGrath nailed a 40-yard field goal as the clock expired and Neyland Stadium emptied onto the field.

“This is college football at its absolute best,” Vols coach Josh Heupel said. “We were the best team on the field tonight. That’s all we can control.”

Tennessee had been 0-15 against Saban since he took over at Alabama in 2007, and the win catapulted the Vols to the No. 1 spot in the CFP rankings for the first time in program history.

ARCH MANNING, NEPHEW OF LEGENDARY NFL BROTHERS, OFFICIALLY SIGNS WITH TEXAS

Two weeks later, it all came crashing down in Athens as Georgia handled quarterback Hendon Hooker and Tennessee.

Two weeks after that, South Carolina ended Tennessee’s national championship hopes by hanging 63 points on ol’ Rocky Top.

But the verdict was already in – Tennessee is back. And college football is better for it.

12-team playoff – December 2022

It took a few months of negotiating, but the College Football Playoff will expand to 12 teams starting in the 2024-25 season.

The College Football Playoff Board of Managers voted to expand the playoff to 12 teams in September, with an eye on the 2026 season for the first year with the expanded field.

But the Rose Bowl’s decision to amend its contract for the 2024 and 2025 seasons allows the CFP to expand from four teams to 12 officially in 2024.

There are certainly going to be those who oppose the new format, as it’s nothing more than a money grab for the schools and conferences.

But will anyone be complaining when there are more meaningful playoff games in December? It’s doubtful.

Prime Time in Boulder – December 2022

It was only a matter of time before an FBS school gave Deion Sanders a shot.

After going 27-6 at FCS Jackson State, Sanders will look to revitalize the once-proud program in Boulder as he becomes the next head coach at Colorado.

The Colorado program has fallen on hard times, firing head coach Karl Dorrell after an 0-5 start to the season. The Buffs ended their 2022 campaign 1-8 in the Pac-12 and were blown out by Utah in their final game, 63-21.

Sanders’ arrival in Boulder has already brought energy to the program, with Prime Time getting two 2023 ESPN 300 recruits and the commitment of his son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

Mike Leach – December 2022

The college football world was devastated on Dec. 12 when it learned that Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach died of complications from a heart condition.

Leach, known affectionately as “The Pirate,” was one of college football’s most eccentric personalities.

Leach spent 21 years as a head coach, with stops at Texas Tech and Washington State before becoming the head coach in Starkville in 2020.

He went 158-107 in his 21 seasons, going 8-9 in bowl games.

Well known for the “Air Raid” offense, Leach has an impressive coaching tree, with Arizona Cardinals’ Kliff Kingsbury, USC head coach Lincoln Riley, TCU’s Sonny Dykes, Tennessee’s Josh Heupel, and Houston’s Dana Holgorsen all coaching under Leach.

“There’s a ball game going on right now in heaven,” former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops said at Leach’s memorial. “And can’t you just see Mike? It’s 4th & 2, he’s on his own 40, and you know he’s going for it.”
