YouTube’s NFL deal turns up the heat in battle for sports rights | Sports rights

YouTube’s $14bn (£11.6bn) deal to stream National Football League (NFL) games marks the latest incursion by a Silicon Valley giant into territory traditionally dominated by broadcasters and pay-TV companies, as live sport becomes the latest battleground for audiences and profits promised by the streaming revolution.

The Google-owned YouTube’s seven-year deal, which will see the world’s largest video platform take over the “Sunday Ticket” package of games held by the US satellite service DirecTV since 1994, followed an auction that included heavy interest from its fellow big tech company Apple.

The deal is the latest in a series of commercially eye-popping deals by the NFL, the most expensive live sports rights in the world, after its $113bn, 11-year agreements struck with broadcast partners last year that saw Amazon snap up $1bn worth of games annually.

The appetite shown by YouTube, which cements another stratospheric increase in rights value for the NFL, will cheer Premier League bosses hoping a new big spender will reignite the lucrative bidding wars for UK rights that marked the last decade.

While the Premier League almost doubled the value of the US rights in a £2bn deal last year with NBC, which is mostly airing matches on its streaming service, Peacock, bosses were forced to roll over a deal with existing partners in the UK to avoid losing potentially hundreds of millions of pounds in an auction lacking new competition.

Beyond Sky and BT, the only new player to buy Premier League rights in the UK in recent years has been Amazon, though the Prime Video-owner has not looked to make a knockout bid.

While YouTube TV and the recently launched YouTube Primetime Channels, an aggregator of third-party subscription services such as Showtime and Starz akin to Amazon’s offering, are US focused the prospect of the $1.2tn parent company Google going for international sports deals now looms large.

“The threat of Google’s free capital entering the rights market is clearly good news for rights sellers worldwide including the Premier League,” says Peter Hutton, the former head of sport at Meta, the parent of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

While the global streaming wars have mostly focused on the hundreds of billions being spent on TV series and films in the battle for subscribers, traditional TV companies from Sky and ITV to Comcast, Disney and Paramount in the US have been facing increasing competition for sports rights.

Pay-TV and cable companies continue to face budget cuts due to the inexorable decline in subscriber numbers switched off by the high prices for subscription TV packages.

Earlier this year Comcast wrote $8.6bn off the value of Sky less than four years after triumphing in a £30bn bidding war for Rupert Murdoch’s pan-European pay-TV empire.

Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, played on the organisation’s move to embrace the younger viewers leading the so-called “cord-cutting” of traditional TV in favour of streaming, describing the deal as a “new era … looking towards the future and building the next generation of NFL fans”.

Meanwhile, deep-pocketed tech companies such as Facebook and YouTube are diversifying their business models after reporting their first-ever declines in the advertising income on which they have been almost completely reliant.

“This is an aggressive move to continue to take more market share from the cable-TV operators,” says Hutton.

Earlier this year, Apple agreed a deal worth $2.5bn over 10 years to broadcast US Major League Soccer matches, after an earlier deal with Major League Baseball for Friday games.

Meta has held sports rights in a number of international markets and has previously bid for the hugely popular Indian Premier League cricket rights in India.

Amazon continues to invest in an array of rights including tennis, rugby and Champions League football in countries including the UK, Germany and Italy.

Even Netflix, which has publicly steadfastly ruled out bidding for live sport, was revealed in November to have looked at rights including the ATP tennis tour, cycling and Women’s Tennis Association as well as looking to buy the World Surf League.

This year has seen the seemingly inexorable global streaming boom come to an abrupt end, leading to a focus on costs and profitability, which is curtailing huge budgets on content that may prove to be expensive flops, putting the certainty and predictability of fan loyalty to live sport in the spotlight.

At the same time Amazon, Disney and Netflix have also seen the huge success and viewer loyalty that sport-themed content including series such as All or Nothing and Formula One: Drive to Survive can provide.

“YouTube’s deal recognises the unique ability of sport to bring a body of fans with it to any service, regardless of delivery technology,” says Hutton. “We’ve seen Warner Bros Discovery invest directly in the Professional Triathletes Organisation this week.

“I think we’ll see more of broadcasters and streamers building equity positions in the sports industry where they can.”

Prisco’s Week 16 NFL picks: Vikings edge Giants, 49ers roll over Commanders, Chiefs crush Seahawks

Week 15 was not good to me with my picks. In fact, it was one of my worst weeks of the season.

Ouch.

So much for getting on a hot streak in the final month. But it’s Christmas week, which means the best present I can give you all is a bunch of winners — and that’s what I intend to do.

But first, a look back at last week’s disaster. I went 11-5 with my straight-up picks, 5-10-1 with my against the spread expert picks and 1-3-1 with my Best Bets as part of the Pick-Six podcast. PS: Two of my best bets were the Patriots — thanks crazy ending — and the Saints — thanks two-point conversion. 

That puts my records at 136-87-1 straight up, 101-114-9 ATS and 47-36-5 with my Best Bets.

With three weeks left, it’s time to pick it up. Or the coal is coming in my stocking.

Thursday, 8:15 p.m. ET (Amazon Prime Video)

Featured Game | New York Jets vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

This is an enormous game in the AFC playoff picture. Jacksonville is riding high behind Trevor Lawrence, but the Jets defense has been outstanding. That will present a real problem for Lawrence. The Jacksonville defense has struggled, but Zach Wilson has as well. Look for Lawrence to get the best of it in the battle of 2021 high first-round quarterbacks. Jacksonville keeps pushing for the postseason with a victory.

Pick: Jaguars 24, Jets 20

Saturday, 1 p.m. ET (Fox, fuboTV)

Featured Game | Baltimore Ravens vs. Atlanta Falcons

The Ravens could have Lamar Jackson back in this one. They need him in the worst way. The passing game is struggling. The Falcons have defensive issues, though, which could help. Desmond Ridder was just OK last week in his first start, and now faces a tougher defense. Ravens win it. 

Pick: Ravens 26, Falcons 13

Saturday, 1 p.m. ET (Fox, fuboTV)

Featured Game | Carolina Panthers vs. Detroit Lions

This is an important game for both teams in terms of playoff implications. The Lions are playing consecutive road games, which will be a challenge. Carolina looked bad last week in losing to the Steelers. The Lions are a tough challenge for the Carolina defense, which will be the difference in the game. The Lions keep rolling. 

Pick: Lions 27, Panthers 17

Saturday, 1 p.m. ET (CBS, Paramount+)

Featured Game | Chicago Bears vs. Buffalo Bills

The Bills are trying to lock up the top seed in the AFC playoffs, while the Bears are playing out the string. But the Bills play the Bengals next week after beating the Dolphins. This looks like a sandwich game. It won’t be. Josh Allen will put up a ton of points for the Bills as they keep rolling. 

Pick: Bills 37, Bears 21

Saturday, 1 p.m. ET (CBS, Paramount+)

Featured Game | Cleveland Browns vs. New Orleans Saints

These two are alive in their playoff races, but neither can afford another loss. That makes this game a big one for both. The Browns haven’t been great on offense with Deshaun Watson back at quarterback, but this could be the game to get it going. Look for the Browns to win it. 

Pick: Browns 23, Saints 16

Saturday, 1 p.m. ET (Fox, fuboTV)

Featured Game | Kansas City Chiefs vs. Seattle Seahawks

The Chiefs are winning games, but they have looked off the past few weeks. Seattle has also struggled the past few games. This is a must-win for them, but this is a tough place to play. Their defense has major issues, which will show up here as Patrick Mahomes lights them up. 

Pick: Chiefs 35, Seahawks 21

Saturday, 1 p.m. ET (Fox, fuboTV)

Featured Game | Minnesota Vikings vs. New York Giants

The Vikings have clinched their division, while the Giants are playing for a wild card spot. The Giants are playing consecutive road games, while the Vikings got an extra day of rest. The Minnesota defense is a major issue, though, which is why the Giants will hang around in this one. It’s close, but the Vikings take it. 

Pick: Vikings 27, Giants 26

Cincinnati Bengals (-3.5) at New England Patriots 

Saturday, 1 p.m. ET (CBS, Paramount+)

Featured Game | New England Patriots vs. Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals are playing consecutive road games, but the Patriots are stinging from a terrible loss last week to the Raiders. The Bengals have some defensive injuries, but the Patriots have issues on offense. Look for Joe Burrow to continue to play well as the Bengals win it. 

Pick: Bengals 30, Pats 17

Saturday, 1 p.m. ET (CBS, Paramount+)

Featured Game | Tennessee Titans vs. Houston Texans

The Titans are in jeopardy of missing the playoffs if they don’t turn things around. The Texans have played much better in recent weeks, but this will be a challenge against a team that badly needs it. The Titans will right things here with a big showing by Derrick Henry. 

Pick: Titans 23, Texans 21

Saturday, 4:05 p.m. ET (CBS, Paramount+)

Featured Game | San Francisco 49ers vs. Washington Commanders

This is a tough trip for Washington against a team that will have four extra days of rest. Washington is struggling on offense, which is never a good thing against a 49ers defense that is the best in the NFL. Look for that defense to shine again with Brock Purdy doing enough to win it.

Pick: 49ers 25, Commanders 14

Saturday, 4:25 p.m. ET (Fox, fuboTV)

Featured Game | Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles will likely be starting Gardner Minshew here for the injured Jalen Hurts. That changes the way they play offense. The Cowboys have looked bad the past two weeks on defense, but I think that changes here. They will get after Minshew with no threat of a quarterback run with him in the game. Cowboys win it. 

Pick: Cowboys 33, Eagles 25

Las Vegas Raiders at Pittsburgh Steelers (-3)

Saturday, 8:15 p.m. ET (NFL Network, fuboTV)

Featured Game | Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Las Vegas Raiders

This is another game featuring two teams that have small playoff hopes. The Raiders are coming off an amazing victory over the Patriots, while the Steelers handled the Panthers on the road. Kenny Pickett should be back for the Steelers here, which matters. Pittsburgh’s defense will get the best of Derek Carr. Steelers take it. 

Pick: Steelers 24, Raiders 16

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (Fox, fuboTV)

Featured Game | Miami Dolphins vs. Green Bay Packers

The Packers are still alive after winning Monday night, but this is tough turnaround on a short week. The Dolphins have lost three straight, but they played better last week. This will be a shootout with the Packers keeping it close as Aaron Rodgers and Tua Tagovailoa put on a show. 

Pick: Dolphins 31, Packers 30

Sunday, 4:30 p.m ET (CBS, Nickelodeon, Paramount+)

Featured Game | Los Angeles Rams vs. Denver Broncos

This is a game many expected to be an important one, but instead it features two of the biggest disappointments of the year. Both teams have offensive issues. The Broncos have the better defense and Russell Wilson will be back. The Rams are also playing on a short week. But something says the Rams find a way to win it. 

Pick: Rams 21, Broncos 14

Featured Game | Arizona Cardinals vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

These two have major issues, but the Bucs are still in first place while the Cardinals are done. Arizona could be down to third-team quarterback Trace McSorley against a Bucs team that blew a big lead last week. Tom Brady has struggled, but I think he will play well here. Bucs take it.

Featured Game | Indianapolis Colts vs. Los Angeles Chargers

The Colts are coming off a loss where they blew a 33-point lead, the type of loss that can send a team packing for the year. They also will be without running back Jonathan Taylor. The Chargers beat the Titans last week, but didn’t play well in doing so. They will here. Justin Herbert plays big to keep the Chargers on the path to playoffs.

NFL Week 15 Power Rankings: Lions, Jaguars among improbable playoff hopefuls entering final stretch of season

It’s December, a time for contenders to emerge and pretenders to fade away.

So go ahead and try explain what happened this past Sunday in the NFL. The Detroit Lions beat the Minnesota Vikings, who came in at 10-2. The Jacksonville Jaguars beat the division-leading Tennessee Titans and the Carolina Panthers went on the road to beat the Seattle Seahawks, a team that appeared to be surging to the postseason.

Detroit, Jacksonville and Carolina are all alive in the playoff chase. In December? Can it be?

The Lions have won five of six to get to 6-7 and get within a game and a half of being in the playoff picture. The Lions have done it behind the offense and especially underrated quarterback Jared Goff and the passing game. The defense has also improved over the past month.

The Jaguars hadn’t won at Tennessee since 2013 before Sunday and were coming off a beat down by the Lions the week before in which they looked lifeless. So who expected Trevor Lawrence to throw for 368 yards and three touchdowns as the Jaguars won, 36-22, in dominant fashion? Lawrence has been as good as any quarterback in the league the last month of the season, putting to rest any of that dumb talk that he wasn’t a franchise passer.

Then there’s Carolina. It has run itself into the playoff chase at 5-8, one game behind Tampa Bay in the NFC South. The Panthers beat Seattle, 30-24, on Sunday and now control their own path into the playoffs. If they win out, including beating Tampa Bay in Week 17, they will be the NFC South winner. Of course, they also have a big game with the Lions in Week 16. The Lions and Panthers playing a big game in late December just isn’t something we expected six weeks ago.

To win the AFC South, the Jaguars would need to win out, including beating the Titans in the final week of the season and then also hope the Titans lose one other game. The schedule is tough with Dallas at home, the Jets on the road, the Texans on the road and then the Titans at home. But it’s possible.

The Lions are my highest-ranked team of the three in this week’s Power Rankings, up to No. 18. But the Jaguars and Panthers are also on the move up.

Sunday was once again a reminder of how crazy the NFL can be and how unpredictable it is from week to week.

Who saw the Lions, Jaguars and Panthers still alive with Christmas around the corner? Not many, that’s for sure — probably not even inside their respective buildings.

 The defense is a major problem for this group. It can’t stop the opposition, which puts so much pressure on its offense. At 10-3, are the Vikings good or not? 2 10-3-0

Ravens

 That was a big-time victory against the Steelers without Lamar Jackson. The defense came up big in that one. 1 9-4-0

Dolphins

 They are on a two-game losing streak. The concern is the offense has struggled as it readies to play the Bills. 1 8-5-0

Commanders

 They come off their bye with a home game against a Giants team they tied two weeks ago. Win that one, and they will have a great shot to be a playoff team. 1 7-5-1

Titans

 What was that against the Jaguars? The defense is awful right now, which won’t win a lot of games going forward, and the offensive line is awful. 2 7-6-0

Chargers

 That was a season-saving victory against Miami. It’s nice to see the passing game finally take some shots down the field. 3 7-6-0

Seahawks

 They blew a home game against the Panthers, dropping them out of the playoffs for now. The defense is back to being a problem in a big way, and Geno Smith made some bad throws in that game. 3 7-6-0

Jets

 The offense didn’t do enough against the Bills, but that didn’t stop coach Robert Saleh from saying he would see them again come playoff time. That’s some real confidence there. — 7-6-0

15


Patriots

 If the playoffs started today, they would be in. The offense got going a bit against the Cardinals, which is a good sign. 2 7-6-0

16


Giants

 They have a tie and three losses in their last four, and that early-season success is fading fast. The defense was awful against the Eagles. 4 7-5-1

Buccaneers

 They just can’t get any momentum this season. The 49ers beat them up in every way imageable Sunday. Yet they are still in first place. 1 6-7-0

Lions

 They are making a playoff push, which is impressive. Jared Goff has been outstanding. 1 6-7-0

Raiders

 Learning how to hold leads is a problem for this team. Losing the way it did to the Rams almost ends its playoff hopes. 1 5-8-0

Browns

 They have to be concerned with what they’ve seen from Deshaun Watson so far. Rust or not, he’s not playing well. 2 5-8-0

Packers

 If they win their final four games, they could be a playoff team. One loss, and it’s likely over. The question is whether they are good enough to run the table. — 5-8-0

Steelers

 Without Kenny Pickett, they were lost against the Ravens. Mitch Trubisky turned it over way too much. — 5-8-0

23


Falcons

 They are going to rookie Desmond Ridder at quarterback, which is the right thing to do. They might have waited too long. — 5-8-0

Jaguars

 Trevor Lawrence is going to keep this team relevant for a long time. He will be a star, which he showed in beating the Titans. — 5-8-0

Panthers

 They are in the playoff mix. Think about that. With Sam Darnold, they could make the playoffs. Amazing. 3 5-8-0

 They have four games left, and they are pretty much playing out the string. This has not been a good season for first-year coach Dennis Allen. 1 4-9-0

 Picking up Baker Mayfield paid off for a game as he beat the Raiders. Now comes a tougher challenge for him at Green Bay, but he will know the offense better as well. — 4-9-0

 They come off their bye with a tough game against the Eagles. It should be a good way for Justin Fields to get an idea of what might come next year by watching Jalen Hurts. — 3-10-0

 The good news is the offense came alive against the Chiefs. The bad news is that it didn’t matter since they lost anyway. — 3-10-0

 They made it interesting against Dallas, which shows they haven’t quit. They are headed for the top pick, which is a good thing. — 1-11-1

The trifecta almost came through last week.

I went 11-5 straight up, 3-2-1 with my best bets as part of the Pick Six Podcast, but went 8-8 with my CBSSports.com expert picks. Why couldn’t the Packers score late to get the cover, rather than kicking that field goal?

The Bills knocked the Pats out of the playoffs last year, so you know the Pats want to get back at them for that. Both teams played on Thanksgiving, so they are rested. But Josh Allen has played really well against the Pats in recent years, going 4-1 in the last five. That stays true. Bills win it.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Atlanta Falcons (+1)

The Steelers are playing consecutive road games outside the division and this one is on a short week. That’s tough to do. It’s also tough to prepare for the Falcons offense on a short week. Atlanta lost a close one last week to Washington, but will bounce back here and beat the Steelers.

Denver Broncos at Baltimore Ravens (-8)

The Broncos are lifeless on offense, which is never a good thing playing consecutive road games and especially against a team coming off a horrible loss. The Ravens haven’t exactly been lighting things up on offense, but they will do enough here to win it and make the Broncos’ season-long misery continue.

Green Bay Packers (-4) at Chicago Bears

Aaron Rodgers should be playing in this one, which is not a good thing for the Bears. He has owned them in his career. Rodgers is banged up, but Justin Fields is hurting for the Bears if he does play. Look for the Packers to go into Soldier Field and win a game against a team they have dominated in recent years.

Jacksonville Jaguars (-1) at Detroit Lions

Featured Game | Detroit Lions vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars are coming off an impressive home victory over the Ravens, while the Lions lost a tough one on Thanksgiving to the Bills. Both teams can score, which means this game will likely get loose. Look for a lot of points as Trevor Lawrence stays hot and the Lions score as well. The Jaguars will win a shootout.

Cleveland Browns (-7) at Houston Texans

This is the return of Deshaun Watson at quarterback for the Browns. It’s his first game and it comes against his former team. How perfect. Will there be rust? Does it matter against the Texans? No, it does not. Browns win it big.

Chiefs win a close one.
